Service overview

## General Window & Door Repairs Explained

### What the service is
We repair the parts of your windows and doors that wear out or break: window hinges, window locks, door locks, door handles, letterboxes, misted glass units and general window and door faults.

### Who it is for
Homeowners whose windows and doors are basically sound but have a fault that makes them hard to use, insecure or draughty. A repair is often far cheaper than a replacement.

### When it is needed
When a window will not open or close, when a sash drops, when a lock is stiff or will not engage, when a handle is loose or snapped, or when a letterbox is broken or lets in draughts.

### Why professional help matters
Many faults look like a simple part failure but are caused by something else, such as a dropped sash or a misaligned keep. Fixing the cause, not just the symptom, stops the problem coming straight back.

The cost of waiting

## What Happens If You Leave It

- A stiff lock or handle usually gets worse until it fails completely, sometimes leaving a door locked shut or unable to lock at all.
- A dropped window sash drags on the frame, wearing seals and stressing the hinges further.
- Windows or doors that do not lock properly are a security risk.
- Small draughts from a misaligned sash or worn letterbox add up to a colder home.

### Common mistakes to avoid

- Forcing a stiff lock or handle, which can snap internal parts of the mechanism.
- Fitting a generic part that does not quite match, so the problem returns.
- Attempting a DIY repair or using a third party first. This voids the 12-month workmanship guarantee if DW Glazing has already worked on it.
- Replacing a whole window or door when a repair would do.

In detail

## Everything To Know About General Window & Door Repairs

### Window hinge repairs
uPVC casement windows usually open on friction hinges fitted at the top and bottom of the sash. These hinges hold the window in position and carry its weight. Over time they can wear, bend or seize.

Signs of a failing hinge include a window that drops when opened, drags on the frame, will not stay open or will not close flush. Replacing the hinges and adjusting the sash usually restores smooth operation.

### Window lock and handle repairs
Most uPVC windows lock using a mechanism inside the sash operated by the handle. If the handle is loose, will not turn, or turns without locking, the handle, the mechanism or the alignment of the sash may be at fault.

Finding which part is the cause is the important step. Replacing a handle when the real issue is a dropped sash only hides the problem for a short time.

### Door lock repairs
Many uPVC and composite doors use a multi-point lock, where lifting the handle engages several locking points. If you have to lift hard, push the door or slam it to lock, the door may have dropped or the keeps may be out of line.

Continuing to force it puts strain on the gearbox inside the lock, which can fail and leave the door stuck. Dealing with it early is usually simpler and cheaper.

### Door handles and letterboxes
Door handles take a lot of use and can become loose, droop or snap. Letterboxes can break, stick open or let draughts through.

Both are straightforward to replace, and getting the right fit means the door looks tidy and works as it should afterwards.

### Misted glass and general faults
Repairs also cover misted glass units, where the seal between the panes has failed, and general window and door faults such as sashes that will not close, worn seals and parts that have come loose.

If you are not sure what is wrong, describe it or send a photo, and David will tell you whether it sounds like a repair or something more.

### About the repair guarantee
Repairs are backed by a 12-month workmanship guarantee. The guarantee does not apply if you attempt to fix the issue yourself, or use a third party, without contacting DW Glazing first.

If something is not right after a repair, call David first so it can be put right under the guarantee.

## Your Guarantee

- Repair work carries a 12-month workmanship guarantee. It does not apply if you try to fix the problem yourself, or use a third party, before contacting DW Glazing.
- Replacement hardware such as hinges, locks and handles carries a 12-month manufacturer guarantee.
