Service overview

## Misted / Failed Glass Unit Replacement Explained

### What the service is
When double glazing mists up between the panes, the sealed glass unit has failed. We measure the unit, supply a new one and fit it into your existing frame, so you keep the window and lose the fog.

### Who it is for
Anyone with windows or doors that are otherwise in good condition but have one or more panes that look cloudy, milky or wet between the glass.

### When it is needed
As soon as you notice condensation or a haze that you cannot wipe away from either side of the glass. It often starts as a faint mist in cold mornings and gets steadily worse.

### Why professional help matters
Glass units must be measured accurately and fitted with the correct packing so the frame and unit sit properly. A badly fitted unit can stress the glass, affect how the sash closes or fail again early.

The cost of waiting

## What Happens If You Leave It

- Once the seal has failed, the mist does not clear on its own. It usually gets worse and can leave permanent staining on the inside of the glass.
- A failed unit no longer insulates the way it should, so the room loses more heat through that pane.
- Cloudy glass spoils the view and makes the whole window look neglected, which matters if you are selling.
- Leaving it can mean the problem is mistaken for a frame fault, leading to an unnecessary full window replacement later.

### Common mistakes to avoid

- Replacing the entire window when only the glass unit has failed.
- Trying to dry or drill out the unit, which does not restore the seal.
- Confusing condensation on the inside of the room-side glass, which is a ventilation issue, with a failed unit.
- Waiting until several units have failed before getting a quote.

What you get

## The Benefits

### Clear glass again
A new sealed unit removes the fog completely, not just for a few weeks.

### Keep your frames
If the frame is sound, you only pay for the glass unit, not a whole new window.

### Less heat loss
A working sealed unit insulates far better than one that has let moisture in.

### 5-year guarantee
New glass units carry a 5-year manufacturer guarantee.

### Fixed price
Agree the price up front. No extras added on the day.

### Honest advice
If the frame does need replacing, you will be told why. If it does not, you will not be sold one.

In detail

## Everything To Know About Misted / Failed Glass Unit Replacement

### What a sealed glass unit is
Double glazing is made of two panes of glass held apart by a spacer bar around the edge. The gap between them is sealed so that dry air or gas stays inside. That sealed sandwich is called an insulated glass unit, or simply a glass unit.

The unit sits in the window or door frame, held in place by beads. It is a separate component from the frame, which is why it can usually be replaced on its own.

### Why glass units mist up
Over time, the edge seal can break down. Once it does, moist air finds its way into the gap. When the glass cools, that moisture condenses on the inside faces of the panes, which is the mist you see.

Because the moisture is trapped between the panes, you cannot wipe it away from either side. The only reliable fix is a new sealed unit.

### Misted unit or room condensation?
Condensation on the room-side surface of the glass, which you can wipe off with a cloth, is not a failed unit. It is usually caused by moisture inside the home, such as cooking, drying clothes or poor ventilation.

Condensation you cannot wipe off from either side is between the panes. That is a failed unit and is the problem this service fixes.

### Windows, doors and different unit types
Glass units are found in windows, glazed doors and side panels. Clear, obscure (privacy) and other glass types are all built as sealed units, and each is measured individually.

Whether it is a bathroom window with obscure glass or the glazed panel in a back door, the approach is the same: measure, supply the right unit, fit it correctly and check the sash or door works as it should.

### When a new window makes more sense
If the frame itself is rotten, warped, cracked or the window will not close or lock, replacing the glass alone will not solve the problem. In that case a new uPVC window may be the better long-term choice.

You will get an honest view at the quote stage, so you only pay for what actually fixes the issue.

## Your Guarantee

- Sealed glass units carry a 5-year manufacturer guarantee.

FAQs

## Misted / Failed Glass Unit Replacement Questions
Can't see your question? Call David on 07855 948729.

How much does it cost to replace a misted glass unit in Hartlepool? It depends on the size and type of glass, so prices are not listed. You get a free, fixed-price quote before any work is done.

Can you replace just the glass and not the whole window?Yes, in most cases. If the frame is in good condition, only the failed sealed unit needs replacing.

Can misted double glazing be fixed without replacing the unit? Not reliably. Once the seal has failed, a new sealed unit is the lasting fix.

What guarantee do new glass units have?New glass units carry a 5-year manufacturer guarantee.

How long does it take to replace a glass unit? Each unit is made to measure, so there is a short wait between measuring and fitting. David will tell you the timing when he quotes.

Is the mist on my window a failed unit?If you cannot wipe it off from either side of the glass, it is between the panes and the unit has failed. If it wipes off on the room side, it is condensation from inside the home.

Are you insured?Yes. DW Glazing and Repairs holds £2,000,000 public liability insurance, so your home is covered while the work is carried out.

How can I pay?Payment is by cash or bank transfer.
